Bennie Nelson, age 75, passed away Friday, July 31, 2026, at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North MS in Oxford, MS.

The family will be having a private family memorial service at a later date.

Bennie born in Coffeeville, Mississippi, on March 2, 1951, to the late Alonzo and LC Melton Nelson. His life was defined by a steadfast dedication to his country, his community, and his loved ones.

Bennie’s commitment to service was evident from an early age and flourished throughout his distinguished career. He proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army, dedicating over two decades to protecting and guiding others as a First Sergeant before retiring after 20 years of service. His military career stands as a testament to his sense of duty, leadership, and unwavering patriotism.

Following his military retirement, Bennie continued his path of service closer to home. He served valiantly with the Desoto County Sheriff's Department, attaining the rank of Captain before his retirement.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bennie’s genuine warmth and unique spirit were most felt by those who had the joy to call him family or friend. He found happiness in simple pleasures—working with his flowers, demonstrating both patience and care that mirrored his approach to life. Bennie had a special affinity for animals, especially his beloved cat, Mojo, who was often a quiet companion by his side. He enjoyed quiet evenings watching the news, and his gentle humor shone through as he lovingly “picked on” his children, making home both a place of laughter and comfort. When not engaged in work or service, Bennie could most often be found enjoying the peace of his own home.

Bennie’s legacy lives on in those he loved most. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Nelson; his daughter, Selena Cleveland (Chris) of Walls, MS; his son, Ben Nelson (Candace) of Senatobia, MS; his step-daughter, Barbara Annette Williamson of Clarksdale, MS; and his step-son, Danny Shaun Self of Clarksdale, MS. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Ragan Medlin, Chloe Nelson, Levi Nelson, Myracle Cleveland, and Alyssa Cleveland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo Nelson and LC Melton Nelson, whose values and strength undoubtedly helped shape the remarkable man Bennie became.

Bennie Nelson will be remembered for his lifetime of selfless service, his steady devotion to those he loved, and the gentle humor and compassion he extended to everyone he met. His memory will be held close by family, friends, and all those whose lives he so deeply touched.
