Edward Gates

Edward “Ed” Gilbert Gates, age 79, passed away Sunday morning, May 5, 2024 at the AMG Specialty Hospital in Batesville, MS.

Ed was born on November 13, 1944 to the late John Gates and Florence Payment Gates in Detour, MI. 

Ed was a resident of Panola County for 15 years. He was a 1963 high school graduate in Decatur, MI. After graduation, he immediately signed on with the Navy, where he served for 6 years. Ed worked as a medical clerk at the VA Hospital in Memphis, TN and was also a current member of the VFW in Jonesboro, AR (post 1991). 

The family he leaves behind includes his wife, Ernestine “Tina” Gates of Batesville, MS; his daughter, Dana Beckum of Batesville, MS; two brothers, Ronald and Robert Gates both of Michigan; two grandchildren, Austin and Brittany Wirth; and two great grandchildren, Carson and Jaxson Calloway. 

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, John Edward Gates; and two brothers, Kenneth Payment and Jack Gates.
