Jack Wayne Darby

Jack Wayne Darby, age 84, passed away Sunday August 2, 2026, at Tyler Holmes Medical Center in Winona, Mississippi. 

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 8, 2026, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the family receiving friends at 10:00 A.M. prior to the service.

Wayne was born October 18, 1941, in Panola County, MS, beginning a life marked by steadfast dedication, gentle strength, and unwavering love for his family.

Wayne’s journey was defined by deep roots and enduring commitments. He was the treasured son of Jack Miller Darby and Sara Hartzell Darby, both of whom preceded him in death and left an indelible mark on his humble character. His love story with life began anew when he married Patsy Sanders Darby, his first wife, whose memory remains dear. Later, Wayne found lasting companionship and comfort in his marriage to Bess H. Darby, who survives him. 

Wayne was the proud and loving father to Cynthia Darby Armstrong (Jimmy) of Courtland, MS and Sara Elizabeth "Liz" Darby Wilson (Bill) of Cottage Grove, TN, and grandfather to nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His daughters remember him as a father whose gentle advice and patient listening were constant wells of support, and whose pride in their lives shined brighter than anything else. In every milestone they reached and every challenge they faced, Wayne stood by, ready with his quiet encouragement and unconditional love.

The halls of the City of Batesville echo his legacy, where Wayne dedicated 32 years of his life in service to the community, culminating in his leadership as Public Works Director. His work was not just a career, but a calling—one he answered with integrity and humility, earning the admiration and gratitude of all who served alongside him.

Away from the duties of his profession, Wayne was never happier than when he was surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, or simply walking through the woods, he found joy and peace in nature’s embrace. Friends and loved ones will always remember his stories from these adventures with tales told with laughter.

Wayne especially cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren. Their laughter rang through his life’s chapters, making even the simplest moments precious. He shared with them his love of the outdoors and the wisdom of appreciating life’s little joys, creating memories that will live on for generations.
