Jay Amis

October 31, 1968 — March 14, 2024

Jesse Mike (Jay) Amis, Jr., age 55, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, TN.

A celebration of Jay's life will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 18, 2024, at the Batesville First Methodist Church with the family receiving friends prior to the service beginning at 12:30.

Jesse Mike (Jay) Amis, Jr. was born on October 31, 1968, to Frances Banks Amis and Jesse Mike Amis, Sr. Jay graduated with honors from Magnolia Heights School in 1987 and from Ole Miss in 1992, where he received a degree in Business Administration.

Jay was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and golf. In high school, he was an all-state and all-star in football and basketball. He was co-captain of the basketball team, which went on to win the overall state championship. His golf team was the runner-up of the MPSEA state golf tournament, and Jay was the second low medalist. At Northwest Community College, Jay starred on the golf team, which went on to win the 1988 Junior College State Championship. Jay qualified for the junior college nationals twice. He was a member of the very prestigious Mississippi Cup Team for several years, and he was the Mid-Amateur Champion in 2000.

Golf was Jay’s second love, after his daughter, Cate. He got his first set of golf clubs when he was seven, and since there was no golf pro at his country club, he taught himself how to play.

Jay was a strong Christian who loved the Lord deeply. He was a member of Batesville Methodist Church, Explorer’s Bible Study, and the Emmaus Community and attended the Civitan Bible Study.

Jay was preceded in death by his father, Mike Amis. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine Noble Amis, his mother Frances Banks Amis, sister Lacy Amis Basinger (David) of Grenada, MS, brother Parker Noble Amis (Betsy) of Houston, TX, nephews Brennan Basinger and Charlie and Henry Amis, nieces Meredith Basinger, Mary Frances Basinger Lott (Brooks), and Jessi Basinger Mashburn (Noah).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Batesville Methodist Church, 119 Panola Ave., Batesville, MS 38606, or Explorer’s Bible Study, P.O. Box 425, Dickson, TN 37056.
