Jean Arwood Howell, age 92, passed away early Sunday morning, January 11, 2026, at her home in Batesville, MS. She was the widow of Bro. Eugene Howell.
Funeral services will be 12:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the interment to follow at Forrest Memorial Park in Batesville, MS. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
Jean was born on September 7, 1933, in Ripley, Tennessee, to the late George Dewey and Effie Frances Howard Arwood. A beloved figure in her community, Jean dedicated a significant portion of her life to shaping young minds as an assistant teacher at Batesville Elementary School and later at Batesville First Methodist Church Daycare until her retirement. Her commitment to education was exemplified by her caring nature and unwavering support for her students.
A devoted member of Adonia Church in Water Valley, MS, Jean's faith was central to her life and often influenced her interactions with others, fostering a spirit of love and compassion.
Jean had a passion for music, particularly old country tunes, and found immense joy in singing and songwriting. She was also an enthusiastic sports fan, with a particular fondness for Major League Baseball. A supporter of the New York Mets and their player Buster Posey, she relished following the team's adventures. Additionally, she spent countless hours fishing for catfish in local ponds, a pastime that brought her much joy and relaxation.
Jean is survived by her sons, David Howell of Batesville, MS, and Larry Howell of Braxton, MS, as well as Roger Howell (Dana) of Enid, MS. She was the proud grandmother of ten grandchildren and cherished her thirty-four great-grandchildren.
