Jimmy Barnett, a beloved educator and cherished family man, passed away on March 1, 2026, at the age of 86.
Funeral services for Jimmy will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the interment to follow at Forrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
Jimmy was born on September 9, 1939, in Panola County, Mississippi to the late James Baxter Barnett and Georgie Elizabeth Harris Barnett. He dedicated nearly 40 years of his life as a school teacher and school administrator for North Panola High School. His unwavering commitment to education touched the lives of countless students and shaped the future of the community he was proud to serve.
In his personal life, Jimmy was happily married to his high school sweetheart, Agnes Bell Barnett, for 66 beautiful years. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories. Their passion for travel took them on many journeys, particularly to the majestic National Parks out West. Beyond traveling, Jimmy had a knack for working and tinkering on old equipment, a hobby that brought him joy and satisfaction throughout his life.
He was a devoted member of the Eureka Methodist Church, where he found community and fellowship with others who shared his faith.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Agnes Barnett of Courtland, MS; two children, Jamie Barnett (Donna) and Misty Leach (John Michael) both of Courtland, MS; ten grandchildren, Magen, Casey, Madison, Meagan, Michael, Marlee, Seth, Jamie, Haley, and Will; and twelve great-grandchildren.
Jimmy Barnett will be remembered not only for his contributions to education but also for his dedication to his family and community. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the love he shared with those around him.
