Joseph Earl Barnett Jr.

Joe was born July 3, 1934 in Banner, MS to the late Joseph Barnett, Sr. and Alice L. Kelly. He married Annis V. Allred in January 1953 and together they were blessed with 3 children, Dennis, Michael and Lori.
Along with his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Annis and 2 of his children, Michael Barnett and Lori Weatherall. He is survived by his son, Dennis (Arlena) of Byhalia, MS; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeremy, Jessica, Shawn, Daniel, Doug and Lauren; and two sisters, Rebecca Barnett Queen of Walnet Creek, CA, and Nancy Barnett Horn of Zachary, LA.; daughter-in-law, Diana Barnett and his son-in-law, Beecher Weatherall. He was also a proud great-grandparent to Garrett, Abigail, Caiden, Eli, Sylvia, Aria, Nicholas, Jonah, Taylor, Abby, and Sebastian.
Joe enlisted in the Navy in August 1951. Served in the Navy for 20 years and the Fleet Reserve for 10. He was a Navy man through and through. He fully retired in Jan. 1971. He was known for saying "A sailor belongs aboard ship and the ship belongs at sea." After the end of his Navy life, he worked for Cohen Burners for 18 years as an engineer for boiler systems.
The Lord called him to ministry in 1981 where he served as pastor in Bruce, MS at Calvary Baptist Church for 4 years. He then served as Pastor for Oak Grove Baptist for an additional 4 years. His favorite bible verse was John 3:16.
He was a Mason and lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Lions Club. He also donated to the Wounded Warrior Fund.
Funeral services for Joe will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the family receiving friends at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. The interment will follow the funeral service at Longtown Cemetery with full military honors.
