February 28, 1933 — June 22, 2021

Livestream of Funeral Service

Julia Ann Davis Hemmings passed away June 22, 2021 after a long illness at her home in Batesville, MS. Ms. Hemmings was born in Courtland, MS on February 28, 1933 to the late Minton Simmes Davis and Emma Gertrude Sullivant Davis.

Funeral services will be 12:00 Noon on Saturday, June 26, 2021 in the Martin Willingham Memorial Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

She was preceded in death by former husband William Hemmings; one son, Daryl Hemmings; and daughter-in-law, Christine Hemmings.

She is survived by two sons, William “Bill” Hemmings, III of Batesville, MS, and Dave Hemmings of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; one daughter, Tina Darby (Ben) of Huntsville, AL; a daughter-in-law, Brigitta Hemmings of Columbus, Indiana; her grandchildren, Sarah Underwood, Elaine Ng, Brandon Hemmings, Julianna Darby, and Noah Darby; and one great grandson, Massimo Rossi.

Ms. Hemmings grew up in Batesville but was a longtime resident of Columbus, Indiana. She was a people person and enjoyed interactions through her work as a nurse aide and later in bakeries and delis. Her life was marked by contentment and generosity. She would not hesitate to give furniture to a person in need and delighted in sharing baked goods with co-workers, bank tellers, and even people who came to her home for appliance and yard maintenance. The foundation for her sweet spirit was her deep faith and desire to please God and share his love with others.

Prior to declining health, she was active at Calvary Baptist Church in Batesville. She loved her pastor and church family and enjoyed participating in the Joyful Generation group of seniors. Ms. Hemmings was known for referring to others as “sugah”, in fact, when she turned 70, someone mailed her 70 sugar packets. Her sweetness on earth will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be directed to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1505 Batesville, MS 38606.
