Sara O. Trotter

Sara O. Trotter, age 87, passed away Wednesday evening, August 26, 2026, at her home in Batesville, Mississippi. Sara was the widow of the late James Edwin "Jimmy" Trotter.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 31, 2026, at the First Methodist Church in Batesville, MS. The family will receive friends Sunday evening, August 30, 2026, from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. at Wells Funeral Home.

Sara was born February 16, 1939, in Longtown, Mississippi to the late Benton and Dorothy Mary Parenton O’Neill.

Sara will be remembered as a sweet, kind, and very detail-oriented woman whose life was devoted to learning, faith, and caring for others. Education was a central part of her life, and she took great pride in encouraging others to learn, grow, and reach their fullest potential.

Sara was a graduate of Como High School, Northwest Mississippi Community College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Delta State University. She spent many years as an English teacher before earning her master’s degree in counseling and becoming a high school guidance counselor. Over the course of her career, Sara taught at numerous schools throughout north Mississippi and in Hammond, Louisiana, leaving a lasting impression on the students whose lives she touched. Quite often while dining at local restaurants, she would be warmly approached by former students who wanted to say hello and ask how she was doing, a quiet but meaningful testament to the respect and affection she inspired.

As a guidance counselor at Magnolia Heights, Sara had a remarkable ability to connect with students and make each one feel seen and valued. She was known for her genuine interest in their lives and her willingness to go the extra mile to help them succeed. While at Magnolia Heights, Sara established the school’s first college scholarship and readiness program, helping students navigate the college application and scholarship process and opening doors to opportunities throughout the South. She took great pride in helping students earn college scholarships. Whether assisting with an application, reviewing an essay, or simply offering encouragement and guidance, Sara was always available to help. Her influence reached far beyond the classroom and counseling office, and many of her students carried the confidence and lessons she gave them throughout their lives. Sara took great pride in her students and never missed an opportunity to brag about them, proudly sharing their successes with family and friends.

Her faith was an important and steady part of her life. Sara was a longtime faithful member of First Methodist Church in Batesville, Mississippi where she was a member of the OWLS Group. She was also a proud member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, the Pan Gens and the Sardis Ladies Club finding community and fellowship through the organizations that meant so much to her. Sara also cherished the friendships she formed throughout her lifetime. She maintained lifelong friendships with her high school classmates. A highlight of her week was gathering with her “Como group” for lunch.

Sara especially cherished being present for the special moments in the lives of her nieces and nephew. She loved attending their sporting events, watching half-time band performances, and other extracurricular activities. As the years passed, that same enthusiasm and devotion continued with the next generation, as she delighted in following the activities and accomplishments of her great-nieces and great-nephews. Even when she was no longer able to attend in person, Sara learned how to follow along online so she could continue watching and cheering them on.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edwin “Jimmy” Trotter, by her parents, Benton O’Neill and Dorothy Mary Parenton O’Neill, and her sister, Dorothy O. Blakely.

Sara leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory. She is survived by her sisters, Judy Sartain (Jackie) of Water Valley, Mississippi, Rosemarie Ellis (Randy) of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Betty Langford (John) of Munford, Tennessee.
